The Strand TX2 wins because it was the only drive of the four that did not get uncomfortably hot during a long sustained copy, and heat is what turns a fast drive into a slow one halfway through a transfer. The Pylon states higher peak speeds and costs less, which makes it the better drive for short copies and the worse one for a card offload.

Portable SSD specifications describe the best moment of a drive’s life. Peak sequential read is real, briefly, and then thermal behaviour takes over — which is the part no maker publishes.
So the matrix above carries one row that came from use rather than a datasheet,
tagged HANDS-ON, and no number is attached to it. Describing what happened is
something this site can do honestly. Quantifying it is not.
Read the interface row before the speed row
Two of these drives state 2000 MB/s or better, and both need a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 port to get anywhere near it. That port is uncommon on laptops. On an ordinary Gen 2 machine all four drives converge, and the comparison collapses to build quality and warranty — which reorders the table completely.
What this comparison does not cover
Internal drives, Thunderbolt enclosures, RAID pairs, and anything about long-term endurance. Four drives, used for a few weeks each.
Questions
Why does the fastest stated drive not win?
Because stated sequential read is a peak figure, reached with a small transfer on a cool drive. A card offload is neither. The Pylon holds its peak briefly and then settles lower; the Strand starts lower and stays there.
Was the slowdown measured?
No. It was observed — the copy progress bar visibly slowed and the enclosure became uncomfortable to hold. That row is tagged HANDS-ON for exactly that reason. No figure is attached to it because none was taken.
Does the interface number matter?
Only if your computer has the matching port. A 2x2 drive on a plain Gen 2 port runs at Gen 2 speed, which makes the two fastest drives here behave like the two slowest.
